About Mashikaku

Mashikaku is a modern, square-based typeface composed solely of horizontal and vertical lines. Inspired by the Edo-period Kakuji script, it retains the geometric essence of its predecessor while adapting to contemporary spaces with a clean and approachable aesthetic.

Kakuji is a decorative Edo-era typeface that represents kanji using only straight lines. It was primarily used for symbols such as family crests and the markings on artisans’ work coats (shirushi hanten). Ukiyo-e prints from the time depict scenes where Kakuji was naturally integrated into daily life.
